Prefinish and Onsite Finishing

Beyond the alternatives of wood products, species, and stain color, the remaining factor to consider is a prefinished or onsite finish flooring. Depending on consumer preferences there are aspects to take into account with both alternatives.

Prefinished Flooring

  • Prefinished flooring goes through treatment at a factory where several coats of stain and finished are baked onto the wood. Once this product is cured it is ready to install in homes.
  • No residual fumes once installed.
  • Customer is able to stay in the home throughout the process.
  • Does not allow for maintenance/recoats.
  • Due to aluminum oxide finish process on a prefinished floor refinishes are more costly, yet achievable.
  • When scuffing and scratching occur over the years there is no way to repair small areas in the finish. It will require an entire refinish.
  • Should you decide to add on to existing prefinished floors there is no guarantee that the manufacture is still carrying your floor product. They often discontinue lines due to lack of sales or as new products develop.
  • This is particularly problematic in the event of damage or repairs.

Onsite Finished Flooring

  • Site finished flooring is untreated wood that is installed then stained and finish at the job site.  This allows customers the opportunity to see and select the color in their home.  Our installers will apply several color options directly to the unfinished surface.
  • Customers need to be out of the house between 1-3 nights for fumes from the stain color and finish to dissipate and for the floors to cure.
  • Allows for maintenance coats and refinishing. More cost effective than the prefinished alternative
  • Easy to repair damages, lace in, and change stain color based on customer preference.
